Karla was married in May of 1986. Growing up with mom making cakes for everyone else gave her lots of ideas. All the cakes she had dreamed of having for her wedding cake someone else in the family had already chosen and used. She wanted hers to be totally different and unique.

The Bride and Groom were made in advance from a gumpaste and choco paste mixture. Then we started on the gumpaste flowers. Weeks and weeks were spent making all of the flowers and leaves that were to go on her special cake.

The stand was custom built just for her wedding cake. Made from steel and very durable, we have used that stand many times since then. The last week before the wedding was spent baking cakes, making lace points and assembling the flowers.

A fellow cake decorator had called and needed to know how to handle the rolled fondant. I told her to come by that week because we had lots of fondant to work with and maybe she could help us and learn at the same time. We had gotten the fondant on the four bottom tiers and were progressing nicely with the cakes.

BUT, I had made a big mistake....... We put that steel (HEAVY) stand on a rolling cart on one end of the kitchen. Then we proceeded to put all of the cakes on that stand. THAT WAS A LOT OF WEIGHT. One of the legs on the bottom of that stand gave and we had cakes sliding, mashing, flying and in general making a big mess all across the kitchen floor. They could not be rescued - BIG MESS. We went immediately to the store bought more ingredients and started baking all over again. That was just the start of the memories for that weekend.

I tell the Brides during my visit with them to not get real upset over all the little things that go wrong or hay wire at their wedding. That is what makes up the memories. You don't remember all the things that go right but someday those things that go wrong will be fun to laugh about and tell their children. Believe me we had lots of memories that weekend. An outdoor wedding had been planned - It turned cold, wet and windy. The church we had booked (just in case of bad weather )had booked two other weddings that day - Nothing like two receptions going in the same room (two hours apart) with a divider between them and sharing the kitchen. We wanted to set up the reception area the night before the wedding because her wedding was scheduled for 10 AM. - a youth function was going till midnight so we couldn't get in that room until after that was over and cleared out. I am sure I have forgotten some of the smaller memories. The big memories are enough for me.
